LYNDORA — The combination of dedication and ability can go a long way.

It took Dalton “Skip” Weyand and Brian Marcellus all the way to the Butler County Bowling Association Hall of Fame Saturday night.

Both were inducted at the BCBA's Hall of Fame dinner at the Lyndora Fire Hall. The HOF was formed in 1995 and now has 44 members.

Weyand and Marcellus are both lifetime members of the BCBA. Weyand has been active in organized bowling for more than 55 years, is a former BCBA president and tournament director and remains active in promoting the sport through several coaching clinics as a certified Bronze Medal coach.

“I've been at this for a long time,” Weyand said. “I've gotten to meet a lot of people through bowling ... a lot of good people.”

He has served as president, vice president, secretary and treasurer for several different leagues.

Weyand originally joined the BCBA board of directors in 1974.

“I went back to night school and had to drop off,” he recalled. “After a while (fellow Hall of Famer) Larry Parenti asked me to come back on the board. I've been there ever since.

“I'm very humbled and honored to receive this award — and I'll continue working for the board.”

Marcellus has been on the BCBA board for the past 13 years, including a 10-year run as second vice president. He was named Director of the Year in 2006 and has served as the Butler City League secretary since 2009.

“I have to thank my mom for introducing me to the game,” Marcellus said. “All I've ever wanted to do was pick up a ball and go bowling.

“When I was a kid, I bowled on our kitchen floor at home. My mom was always secretary in the adult league her and dad bowled in. That's where my love for numbers came from.”

And Marcellus has piled up plenty.

He has participated in 28 Butler County tournaments, winning 15 championships. He's participated in 26 consecutive state tournaments and seven ABC/USBC national tournaments.

Marcellus once carried a 237 average for a season at Bon Aire Bowl. He has 18 career sanctioned 300-games, 12 299-games, more than 500 700-series and six 800-series.

He rolled the last 300-game at the old Family Bowlaway on Route 8 and the first 300 at the current Family Bowlaway.

“Kevin Caparosa hired me at Family Bowlaway out of high school,” Marcellus recalled. “When you worked there, you could bowl there as much as you wanted. That's when my game really started to take off.”

Marcellus has held the high average in Butler County in six different years and maintained the high average in 10 different leagues. He is one of five team members owning the county's highest-ever scratch series record of 3,646.

Weyand and Marcellus respect each other's achievements.

“I can't think of anybody better to be going into this Hall of Fame with,” Weyand said.

Marcellus referred to Weyand's induction as “well-deserved and long overdue.”

Weyand has been a solid bowler in his own right through the years. He has bowled 300-games at Family Lanes and Meridian Lanes. He has also bowled 299 and 298 games.

Weyand was a BCBA Doubles Tournament champion in 1974, 1984 and 1994.

“To do that over three different decades is a pretty amazing accomplishment,” HOF dinner master of ceremonies Bob Cupp said.

Weyand and Marcellus both plan to continue efforts in growing the game as Butler County's three bowling associations — men's, women's and youth — merge later this year.

“I love it,” Marcellus said of the sport. “When I joined the old travel league, I got to bowl with the best bowlers in Butler.

“I got to bowl with Ray Henry. That was amazing. He is the heart and soul of bowling in Butler.”

“I love the sport,” Weyand said. “It's something anybody can do and everybody can have fun at.”
