James E. Slaugenhoup, 71, of East Brady died Friday after a very courageous battle with leukemia.

Born on May 21, 1942, in East Brady, he was the son of James M. and Dorothy (Downing) Slaugenhoup.

James was a 1960 graduate of East Brady High School. After seven years of night school, he graduated from Butler County Community College.

Jim served in the U.S. Army from 1960-1966.

He was a member of the St. Eusebius Roman Catholic Church in East Brady. It was there he married Barbara Patsy on April 11, 1964. She survives.

From 1963 to 1982 he was employed as the manager of manufacturing engineering at Pullman Standard in Butler. From 1982 to 2004 Jim was employed with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania-Department of Transportation (PennDOT). His career with PennDOT started as district manager of Butler and then Clarion County. Jim assumed the position of district maintenance manager of Indiana County in 1996. During 1999, he became the assistant district executive for maintenance. Jim was the first individual in the state of Pennsylvania to obtain this position without a civil engineering degree. Jim retired from PennDOT on June 30, 2004.

Jim cherished his family, he enjoyed annual trips to the beach, watching and attending sporting events. He could organize, plan and budget any activity or project. He will be greatly missed.

Jim's greatest success was that as a father to his five children, James Slaugenhoup and Maria Slaugenhoup of East Brady, Julie (Don) Griffiths of Chicora, Ryan (Gina) Slaugenhoup of Westover, W.Va., and Dan (Megan) Slaugenhoup of East Brady. There is no love greater than the love Jim had for his three grandchildren, Kate, Emma and Ty Slaugenhoup.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Karen, and his brother, Roger.

Slaugenhoup — The friends of James E. Slaugenhoup, who died Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Buechele Funeral Home, 707 Kellys Way, East Brady, PA 16028.A parish prayer service will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Eusebius Roman Catholic Church with the Rev.
