Wayne R. Conley

Wayne R. Conley, 83, of Mars died Wednesday afternoon at the UPMC Passavant Hospital, McCandless Township.

Born Sept. 30, 1922, in Adams Township, he was the son of Ross V. and Mildred McCandless Conley.

He was a 1941 graduate of Mars High School.

Mr. Conley retired after 32 years as a grocery clerk for the A&P Food Store in Mars, and later worked for five years as a security guard for the St. John Lutheran Home and the Vision Child Care Center, both in Mars. He was a substitute mail carrier for the Mars Post Office for 10 years.

He was a member of the Mars Alliance Church, where he was treasurer and was a deacon, elder, trustee and usher.

A corporal in the Army, Mr. Conley was a company clerk for the 5th Infantry Division and the 29th Quartermaster Company. He participated in the Rhineland and Central European Theaters during World War II. He also served during the Korean War.

As a charter member of 62 years of the Mars American Legion Post 787, he served as commander, post adjutant, historian and public relations chairman. He also was a charter member of the Mars VFW Post 7505, and belonged to the Disabled American Veterans.

He also held similar positions in the Butler County 26th District and Western Section of the American Legion in Pennsylvania.

Surviving are his wife, Emmylou Porter Conley, whom he married Sept. 4, 1965; a son, Ross W. Conley of Mars; a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Joy E.) James of Mars; and a grandson, Kenneth Ross James.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Vernon Conley.

Conley, who died Wednesday, May 31, 2006, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the <B>McDonald-Aeberli Funeral Home</B>, 238 Crowe Ave., Mars, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Mars Alliance Church along Route 228 in Adams Township. The Rev. Paul Cope, pastor, will officiate.Burial with military honors, provided by the Bakerstown American Legion Post 548 Honor Guard, will be in the Mars Cemetery, Adams Township.Memorial donations may be sent to the Mars Alliance Church, P.O.
