Vulcans top SRU in OT

Lisa Gottuso scored 22 points to help the California (Pa.) University women's basketball team shake off a sluggish start and pull out a 57-54 overtime victory over Slippery Rock Monday.

The Vulcans (18-4, 7-0) shot 13.6 percent from the floor in the first half (3 for 22) and trailed 21-9 at the break.

Slippery Rock (11-11, 3-4) received 14 points from Jessica Schake, who also led the team with nine rebounds. KellyAnn Staudinger was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor to finish with 10 points.

Butler graduate Kim Nowakowski had eight points and five rebounds for Cal, while Grove City High grad Amber McFeely had four points and four assists for The Rock.

BC3 77, Franciscan (Ohio) University 49 — Stephanie Devore (Karns City) had 16 points and Julie Wills (Seneca Valley) had 14 to lead the Pioneers.Megan Struble added 10 rebounds and Shannon Onderko had six assists for BC3 (12-6, 3-5), which faces Potomac State (Md.) Saturday in the WPCC semifinals.Last Saturday, the Pioneers defeated 83-50 CCAC-Boyce as Brittany Beatty scored 28 points.

Jason Cardillo (165 pounds) and Chris Clarke (125) each won all four matches Sunday to lead SRU to the team championship in the Eastern Region Duals at Duquesne University.The Rock defeated Millersville 30-6, Delaware State 53-4, Gardner-Webb 22-12 and Duquesne 21-9.The wins improved SRU to 12-8, the most wins since 1975-76, when a Fred Powell-coached team went 13-3.Cardillo (31-9) won by pin, technical fall, major decision and decision; while Clarke won three decisions and a forfeit win.Sal Lascari (133), Shawn Baglio (149), Charlie Pienaar (184) and Andrew Joseph (197) each went 3-1.
