Dance team proposed for Mars
ADAMS TWP — Mars School Board was presented with a proposal for a dance team Tuesday night.
The proposal came from Jamie DeMarco, who recently moved into the district and teaches dance in the area.
“I've danced all my life,” DeMarco said. “My goal is to start a dance team for grades nine through 12.”
Among other things, the team would perform at varsity games and generate school spirit.
DeMarco recognized the district has a cheerleading program. However, DeMarco said a dance team would attract a different demographic and could co-exist well with already established arts groups.
“A dance team hits an entirely new group of kids,” DeMarco said. “I think it's something that could be successful.”
DeMarco said dance teams can also lead to collegiate scholarship opportunities, an added benefit of starting a group at the high school level.
DeMarco said she has experience within the district as the choreographer for the district musical.
Citing groups she's started in Seneca Valley and other communities, DeMarco said she had extensive startup experience for dance groups.
“I've started them from the ground up,” DeMarco said.
DeMarco said ideally, and if approved by the district, the dance team would be able to start this summer in time for football season. She said after football season, the team would begin transitioning into basketball season.
Ultimately, DeMarco said she'd like to start a junior high team and work closely with existing district arts programs.
The board agreed to add DeMarco's proposal to next week's agenda.
