Harold Lee Hockenberry

Harold Lee Hockenberry of Huntsville, Ala., died peacefully Thursday at Crestwood Hospital.

Lee was born March 27, 1932, in Butler, to John and Alice Hockenberry. He was a graduate of Campbell University and the University of Alabama Huntsville.

Lee served in the U.S. Army for 35 years and retired as a command sergeant major in 1985. During his service, he received the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal and many other military citations and awards. In 2011, he received the Director's Award for Excellence which was given in recognition of his work with the Office of Personnel Management.

Lee was an avid bridge player and an active member of the following groups: the Golden K Kiwanis Club, the 17th Signal Battalion Association, the 82nd Airborne Division Association and the Vietnam Veterans. He was a longtime member of Latham Memorial Church in Huntsville.

Lee was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and their children, Jon and Aleda Hockenberry of Houston, Texas, and Sharon and Bill Bonney of Marietta, Ga.

Also surviving are his grandchildren, Kim, Tommy, Billy, Caroline, Ashly, Melanie, Adrian and Abrahim, and their spouses, Jeremy, Jodie, Jeff, Paul and Worth; and seven great-grandchildren, Trevor, Nathan, Leah, Chase, Bonnie, Bridgett and Jack.

HOCKENBERRY — A memorial service for Harold Lee Hockenberry, who died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2016, will begin with a viewing from 3 p.m. until the time of service at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary of Latham United Methodist Church.Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, Ala., where Lee will receive full military honors.“To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan.” — Abraham Lincoln
