Seven Fields cancels St. Patrick’s Day 5K

Seven Fields Borough’s St. Patrick’s Pot of Gold 5K Run and Walk on Saturday, March 18, has been canceled due to lack of participation.

“Unfortunately, we only had 10 runners registered,” borough manager Tom Smith said. “It was St. Patrick’s Day weekend, so maybe people had other plans for that Saturday, but we just sort of felt it was best to maybe move it to the fall.”

The event was sponsored by the council and the parks and recreation committee as a fundraiser for various community events, including Seven Fields’ Easter Egg Hunt, Boo Bash and Christmas Light-Up Night.

It was planned, according to Smith, in partnership with the borough’s Second Sole location, a runner’s supply store off Route 228.

“You know, people wear the little fobs, or tags, on their shoes for timing purposes,” Smith said. “They have that stuff — the start line, the finish line — they kind of helped us organize it in that aspect.”

Smith said the borough sought out volunteers from Seneca Valley School District and scouting organizations in the last two months, but were unable to register enough runners in time.

“So, again, we’re just going to try to postpone it down the road, and try it again,” he said. “We think it would be a nice endeavor for the community, bringing people from the outside into Seven Fields, but then also for a good cause — raising funds for the parks and rec committee.”

The borough does not have a firm replacement date set, but the plan is it to reschedule it in the fall.

“I’m still working with the gentleman from Second Sole to get a couple dates,” Smith explained. “I think that they were excited just as much as the council and some of the residents to have this.”

The hope, according to Smith, is to make the event an annual part of the community.

“I think if it’s successful, it would be something that the council would be willing to do on an annual basis, similar to the carnival; beer, wine and music fest; and food truck nights,” Smith said. “I definitely think that’s the hopeful, optimistic intention.”
