Family raises funds for child who died in fatal drowning
The family of a Pittsburgh boy who drowned at Moraine State Park on Monday, Aug. 7, has organized a RaiseThon fundraiser in the aftermath of his death.
“His boundless energy and loving nature touched everyone who knew him,” the family said in its fundraising statement. “Now, where his laughter and sweetness once were, there's a deep silence and unbearable pain. Our family's heartbreak is immeasurable, leaving us with an overwhelming pain.”
On Monday afternoon, Sholom Dov Ber Markel, 4, was found unresponsive at the Pleasant Valley Beach on the South Shore of Lake Arthur.
As of Friday afternoon, the campaign had raised $130,923 of its intended $180,000 goal, with more than 350 donors. Funds will be used to help support Sholom’s parents, Dovid and Goldie.
“Facing immense grief and unexpected funeral costs, Dovid and Goldie need our support,” the statement reads. “They're trying to be strong for their three other children, handle daily expenses, and afford necessary counseling.”
According to the fundraising website, Sholom is survived by his parents and his siblings Menachem Mendel, Chaya Mushka and Yosef Yitzchak.
Sholom and his family were swimming at the park on the day of his death. According to the Butler County coroner, he was not wearing flotation devices.
Moraine State Park manager Dustin Drew said there was no storm activity at the time, and the incident is under investigation.
Responding to the call were Portersville EMS, Prospect Fire Department Rescue, Butler Ambulance and an Allegheny Health Network emergency room physician.
