Man accused of assaulting officer after Sheetz theft

A man is accused of assaulting a Butler Township police officer following an alleged theft at the Sheetz at 499 Evans City Road.

Police said Jamie C. Davis Jr., 18, intentionally wrecked his 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt into a patrol vehicle Nov. 14 while attempting to flee through the parking lot of Whitestown Village.

He was then arrested alongside a 17-year-old male, according to documents, after their vehicle crashed into a tree on Pierce Avenue.

On Wednesday, Nov. 15, Davis was charged by Butler Township Police Department with felonies aggravated assault, criminal mischief and fleeing an officer; misdemeanors retail theft, criminal conspiracy, corruption of minors, evading arrest on foot and driving under the influence; and summary offenses driving without lights to avoid arrest, reckless driving and the purchase of alcoholic beverages by a minor.

Sheetz’s security reported a retail theft around 11:55 p.m. Tuesday, according to documents, with two male suspects fleeing in a black two-door Chevrolet Cobalt with stolen alcohol.

Butler Township Police Department said an officer identified the vehicle as it drove past the Butler Township police station on Whitestown Road, pursuing it as it turned into Whitestown Village.

The officer found the vehicle stuck in the mud at the end of the complex’s parking lot. After breaking free, it drove into the officer’s patrol vehicle, striking the driver’s side front and rear doors.

Police said the officer continued pursuing the vehicle along Whitestown Road and onto Garden Avenue. The driver had allegedly turned off the vehicle’s lights to avoid detection, and the officer lost sight of it near North Boundary Street.

Following the sound of the vehicle’s exhaust, the officer then found it crashed into a tree along Pierce Avenue, empty.

Davis and the 17-year-old were found hiding nearby, according to documents, with Davis admitting to drinking “a few” alcoholic beverages and exhibiting signs of impairment.

Both suspects were handcuffed and searched. Davis was transported to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test.

About $400 worth of alcoholic beverages and Sheetz merchandise were recovered from Davis’ vehicle, according to documents, and video surveillance from the Evans City Road Sheetz confirmed some of the items had been removed from the location by Davis and the 17-year-old.

Police said other Butler Township Sheetz locations are reviewing video surveillance and inventory for missing items.

Davis’ preliminary hearing before District Judge Kevin P. O’Donnell is scheduled for Dec. 7.
