5. Get vaccinated
Make a resolution this new year to safeguard the family against whatever 2024 throws at them with the most up-to-date vaccinations.
Dr. Brian Donnelly, with Allegheny Health Network Pediatrics in Seven Fields and Cranberry Township, said vaccinations are a proven first line of defense against disease in the coming year.
“It would provide you the protection against diseases,” he said, “without having to suffer through the disease itself.”
And whether it’s time to get the COVID booster, the flu shot or a respiratory virus vaccine, Donnelly said the first step is as simple as visiting the family doctor.
“It’s very age dependent, so your best bet would be talk to your doctor about what you are up to date on and not up to date on,” he said.
And while some seasonal vaccines may be available by appointment at pharmacies like Rite Aid, CVS or Walgreens, Donnelly said it is important to keep a record of every family member’s vaccinations.
“In terms of pediatrics, there are other vaccines that we use to protect against some bacteria as well,” he said. “Tetanus is one that everybody should stay up to date on, regardless of their age.”
He recommended families visit the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s online vaccine portal for more information, and that families also maintain a healthy lifestyle going into 2024.
“The basics would be: good nutrition, regular exercise and enough sleep,” he said.
