Police: Man charged after firing shots in Butler with child in the car

A Cheswick man is facing charges after police say he fired shots in Butler with a child in his car.

Kristian James Howard, 22, was charged with felony endangering a child and misdemeanor recklessly endangering another person after he exited his vehicle and fired shots on Monday, Jan. 27, according to an affidavit.

Police said witnesses reported seeing a man shooting a gun into a sweatshirt on the ground in the 300 block of West Jefferson Street. Police said they found eight shell casings and a burgundy sweatshirt with several bullet holes appearing to belong to a female.

After reviewing street cameras, police determined a small child in a rear-facing car seat in the vehicle during the incident.

Police spoke to two witnesses at the scene and said both described seeing Howard drive the wrong direction down West Jefferson Street. Police said after Howard exited his vehicle in the 300 block, he set a sweatshirt on the ground, took out a firearm and shot multiple times into it.

Police used street cameras and social media to identify and match the driver to the vehicle.

Witnesses told police Howard returned to his vehicle that “looked like an old cop car” before reportedly smiling at the witnesses, spinning his tires and driving off.

Howard’s preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
