Garbage truck tangled in power lines freed after lengthy wait Thursday evening in Cherry Township

A garbage truck went off the road causing damage and a power outage for a handful of Cherry Township residents Thursday evening, Feb. 6.

West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department Chief Curt Mershimer said they responded to a call around 10:20 p.m. Thursday night on Findlay Road in Cherry Township for a garbage truck tangled in electric wires.

Mershimer said crews arrived to find two individuals inside the Tri-County Industries garbage truck, but were unsure if power to the downed lines had been disconnected. The occupants were uninjured and surprisingly calm, he said.

The garbage truck was entangled in a phone wire that caused two electric poles to break, according to Central Electric Cooperative communications supervisor Nikki Staley. She said crash caused power outages for seven residences, and the broken poles required a large crew to repair.

Staley said the power had been restored before morning but was not sure how long power was out.

Mershimer said Central Electric Cooperative crews arrived about an hour and a half after he reported the downed wires. Fire crews were at the scene for about two hours and left as the power company was clearing the scene and restoring power.

Attempts to reach Tri-County Industries for comment were unsuccessful Friday afternoon.
