Day-old calf dies in Armstrong County barn fire
A calf born the day before and two cats died in a barn fire Sunday morning, Feb. 9, in Armstrong County.
Sugarcreek Township Volunteer Fire Department responded first in the icy conditions just after 4 a.m. to find fire already through the roof of the structure along Little Road in Sugarcreek Township, according to Chief Jimmy Hillwig.
Firefighters were able to rescue the mother of the calf who died in the fire. No other injuries were reported. Crews were on the scene for about two and a half hours, according to scanner traffic.
Tankers from six fire companies were dispatched to extinguish the flames. Hillwig said the walls of the barn were still standing but had no roof.
“He’s going to rebuild it, but it’s a loss,” Hillwig said.
Crews had to respond cautiously with the ice, but no trucks slid off the road. From Butler County, Chicora Volunteer Fire Department, Petrolia Volunteer Fire Department, Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department and Bruin Volunteer Fire Department responded, along with East Brady Volunteer Fire Department, Hose Company 6 Kittanning, West Hills Emergency Services and Worthington-West Franklin Volunteer Fire Department.
“The worst part was people falling,” Hillwig said.
