Weekend precipitation in Butler, Armstrong counties causes flooding in one area, threatens another
Armstrong County’s Buffalo Creek flooded nearby homes Sunday, Feb. 16, while Butler County’s Connoquenessing Creek stayed within its banks.
South Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department evacuated some residents near Boggsville and encouraged others to remain vigilant, it said in a Facebook post.
The post warned drivers not to drive through standing water in flooded roadways and to expect an increased emergency personnel presence.
The fire department issued 15 mandatory evacuation orders and an additional 10 with the option to shelter in place, according to WTAE. It said the creek is about 9 inches above its average with 17 homes in the flood plains.
“I think we’ve dodged most of the bullets,” Harmony Borough Council President Greg Such said.
Such said Connoquenessing Creek rose but stayed within its banks during the weekend and Monday morning. He said three low-lying areas around the borough had water laying in the grass, such as in the yard behind the Center of Harmony & Opera Hall Venue, in front of Union Brothers Brewing and on an area of German Street with a bad drain. The drain will be fixed in an upcoming stormwater project, he said.
Such said he and the fire district will continue monitoring the creek.
Butler County emergency response crews responded to three calls for flooding Sunday.
Oneida Valley Volunteer Fire Department responded to two of them, the first around 8:30 a.m. for a Center Township home. Fire Chief Gary Wulff said the incident was for water damage in the basement and the homeowners had the situation under control when crews arrived.
The second was around 8 p.m. to a Chicora home for more water in the basement. Crews took about an hour to pump the water out. Herman Volunteer Fire Company took the lead on the earlier incident around 7:30 a.m. at the Summit Township Sportsman Club.
Attempts to reach the club were unsuccessful, but 911 call logs shows crews were on scene briefly.
