Woman arrested for DUI with kids in car

Penn Township police arrested a Renfrew woman after she allegedly crashed her car with her two kids inside while driving under the influence of alcohol.

Penn Township police charged Laken Mary Kearns, 35, with felony endangering the welfare of children and two misdemeanor DUI counts following the Thursday, Feb. 20 crash.

Police said Kearns’ husband heard his two 5- and 6-year-old children crying. He found them outside crossing the street with their mother and their crashed Chevrolet SUV on the side of the road.

Police said the husband assisted his children inside and noticed Kearns to be highly intoxicated. When an officer arrived and spoke with Kearns, they noticed her very pronounced slurred speech, according to the affidavit. The officer asked Kearns about the crashed vehicle across the street, and Kearns said she couldn’t get it up the driveway because it wasn’t four-wheel drive.

Kearns was taken into custody and provided two breath samples of 0.271% and 0.278%. The legal limit in Pennsylvania is 0.08%.

Kearns’ preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. March 4 before District Judge Jack Ripper.
