Clay Township home fills with about five feet of water Monday

Fire crews found 4 to 5 feet of water in the basement of an unoccupied Clay Township home Monday morning, March 3.

The call came in at about 8:45 a.m., and firefighters arrived to find a waterline in an upstairs room which “must have been broken for some time” for water to leak through the ceiling and accumulate in the basement, according to Curt Mershimer, chief of West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department,

Mershimer said firefighters used two electric sump pumps running inside the basement and a larger gasoline pump running outside to suck water out of the basement. The house lost power during the incident, he said.

The crew was on the scene for around three hours and 40 minutes, according to a report from Butler County 911.

The property owner also was on scene.
