National Weather Service, DCNR caution about wildfire risk

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh said dry and windy conditions Tuesday afternoon will create an elevated risk of wildfire.

The service said the wind forecast of gusts around 20 to 30 mph and humidity of 25% to 30% increase the wildfire risk. If dry grasses and tree litter begin to burn, the fire will have the potential to spread rapidly, the service said.

The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources listed the fire risk as moderate for Tuesday, which means wildfires are expected to ignite and spread, but should not be difficult to contain.

The department recommends restricting burning to the early morning and late evening to avoid windy conditions.

The weather service advised caution when handling ignition sources like matches, cigarettes or machinery.
