National Weather Service warns of brush fire conditions Wednesday
The National Weather Service anticipates almost record-breaking seasonal temperatures Wednesday, March 19, and prime conditions for brush fires.
A spokesperson said temperatures at the closest weather station, the Pittsburgh International Airport, could rise to 77 degrees Fahrenheit, one degree below the record of 78 degrees Fahrenheit reported in 1898. The spokesperson said nearby Ohio stations are also forecast near record-breaking temperatures.
Wind in the area will average around 10-20 mph with gusts from 30-35 mph. Humidity will average around 15-25%.
The spokesperson said the combination of warm temperatures, dry air and gusty winds create an increased risk of brush fires. He said fuels in the area that typically contribute to the spread of brush fires are still wet but have the potential to dry out very quickly.
