Man charged after reportedly assaulting, biting man

A Butler man allegedly broke into a woman’s home and attacked a man inside, police said.

Shawndell J. Zapata, 22, was charged with one felony count each of burglary, aggravated assault and criminal trespass; and one count of misdemeanor simple assault related to a Sunday, March 23, incident in Butler.

Police said they were dispatched to an area in the 200 block of East Walnut Street for a woman yelling for help, but were advised of another call reporting a man had assaulted someone in the street.

Police said Zapata went to a woman’s house and yelled through the door, but after several minutes of no one answering, he broke through the door and attacked a man inside. Police said Zapata continued to attack the man after pulling him outside.

Police said Zapata bit two people during the fight and slammed a man on the back of his neck. The man was transported to Allegheny General Hospital, police said.

Zapata’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. March 31 before District Judge William Fullerton.
