Man arrested, charged with robbing Amish buggy in Mercer County
A West Middlesex man was charged late last week after attempting to rob Amish buggies in Mercer County, according to police.
State police in Mercer charged Todd A. Baker, 33, with one felony count each of robbery and criminal attempt at robbery related to a March 27 incident in Lackawannock Township, Mercer County.
Police said they were dispatched for a reported armed robbery in the area of Number 8 Road and Speer Road. Police said a man from the Amish community told them a black sedan stopped in front of his horse and buggy before a man exited the passenger side dressed in dark clothing and wearing a medical mask.
The suspect then pointed a pistol at the Amish man and demanded his wallet, police said. The Amish man complied and the suspect got back in the sedan before it drove away, according to police.
While interviewing the Amish man, police said, a second Amish man arrived and said he had just been in an attempted robbery while traveling in his horse and buggy on Leesburg Station Road in Wilmington Township, Mercer County. The man gave police the same description as in the first incident, but in this case, the black sedan drove next to the buggy instead.
Police said a man in the passenger seat pointed a gun at the Amish man and demanded his wallet through the open window, but the vehicle drove off before the Amish man could get his horse to stop.
Police said they received several tips in the following days that listed Todd Baker and another man as potential suspects who had lived in the area, and they found one owned a black Chevrolet Cruze.
Police said they received information April 2 explaining the other man was staying at a Lowellville, Ohio, motel and found the vehicle outside the room. Police said when speaking with him about the robbery, he said “I didn’t want anything to do with that” and “It wasn’t my idea.”
The suspect also told police the gun Baker used wasn’t real and shot pellets or BBs, and it was kept in the car.
Police said the same day, Baker and a woman were arrested in an unrelated investigation following a traffic stop while operating a silver Subaru Impreza. The woman, in an interview, said there was a pellet gun in the car that the other man had left there, and she knew the other man’s vehicle was involved in the Amish robbery. She said the other man had been bragging about robbing the Amish, police said.
Police searched the vehicle and found a replica Glock 17 airsoft gun.
Police interviewed the other man on April 4 and discovered he drove the vehicle the night of the robbery while Baker was in the passenger seat. Police said the other man explained both incidents and said the wallet Baker took from the Amish man had about $90 they used to buy drugs.
Baker’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. April 17 before District Judge Daniel Davis. He’s being held in Mercer County Prison on a $100,000 bond.
The driver is not facing charges at this time.
