Man walking across country spotted in Slippery Rock
A man walking across the United States was spotted in Slippery Rock on Wednesday, April 10.
Jake Sansing, a U.S. Army veteran, became homeless after leaving the Army and has been traveling across the country with his equipment for four years, according to his website.
Sansing posted a video of himself to his Facebook page walking in the rain through the borough beside Steele Mill and up the borough’s Main Street toward the post office. He entered Slippery Rock coming from New Castle, Lawrence County. He said the hills along his route made the walk difficult.
He visited the Main Street post office and stopped at Rooster’s Coffee Bar to escape the rain, adding that he thought the cup of coffee was expensive, but tasty. He was recognized by a woman and talked to her about the route he would take next.
Sansing said on the video he was considering traveling north toward Mercer, then would be traveling east. He said he sets his Google Maps to show bike routes so it shows hills. He said he will sometimes accept short rides. He has walked across the country before, but this time it’s to promote his book, he said.
Sansing published his book titled “Walking America: A 10,000 Mile Journey of Self-Healing” in 2020.
