More information released on Wednesday car chase in Butler and Allegheny counties
Butler police have released more information on the vehicle stolen Wednesday, April 23, from Butler that crashed in Shaler Township, Allegheny County.
Richard Russell, 27, of Butler, stole the 2012 Ford Escape from the Sunoco on East Jefferson Street while the owner was in the store around 12:22 p.m. and drove the vehicle out of Butler using Route 8, police said.
The vehicle was eventually spotted by Northern Regional Police Department officers in Allegheny County. Multiple Allegheny County departments joined the chase before the vehicle crashed over an embankment and fell about 80 feet into a creek, according to a news release.
Police said Russell was transported to a hospital with suspected non-life-threatening injuries, and he had an active warrant as a parole absconder. The stolen vehicle was heavily damaged and other property was damaged along the route, the news release said.
Police said charges of felony vehicle theft, receiving stolen property, fleeing and eluding, and multiple misdemeanor and summary charges against Russell are forthcoming.
