Man charged with breaking into vehicles at Adams Township dealership

Police arrested a man after he allegedly broke into multiple vehicles at an Adams Township dealership, slept in a customer’s Corvette and drove the owner’s Mercury Bobcat.

Ray A. Hernandez, 33, was charged with felony theft and one misdemeanor count each of impersonating a public servant, theft, unlawful vehicle use, criminal mischief and loitering following an April 24 incident at a Adams Township dealership.

Police said they were contacted by the business about a man inside a customer’s Corvette who slept in the vehicle during the night while the business was closed. The man was told someone would be calling the police, to which he responded by saying he was the police, according to the affidavit.

Police said Hernandez had the Corvette’s hood up, all passenger doors open and the gas door open with all the vehicle’s paperwork scattered on the roof. Police said Hernandez told employees he needed his keys to the Corvette and had been waiting all night for them.

Police searched the Corvette and found a key fob for a Chevrolet Avalanche parked inside the area for impounded vehicles. Employees told them Adams Township police had impounded the vehicle the previous night.

Police said they took Hernandez to the Adams Township Police Department and found he was wearing a gray Corvette sweatshirt valued at $55 which belonged to the Corvette’s owner.

After reviewing surveillance footage from the business, police discovered Hernandez arrived at the business around 2 a.m. the night before and operated a Mercury Bobcat belonging to the dealership owner, who parked it at his on-site residence.

Police said while driving the Bobcat, Hernandez pushed $2,000 of topsoil over a hillside.

Hernandez is being held in Butler County Prison on a $100,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. May 7 before District Judge Amy Marcinkiewicz.
