Texas resident charged, accused of Facebook scam appearing to sell items from hacked account

A Facebook user was scammed out of $4,500 when a Texas resident hacked into another Facebook account and made posts about items for sale.

Adams Township police have charged Liting Lui, 35, of Richmond, Texas, after Lui with one felony count each of theft by false impression and identity theft related to a Dec. 12 incident.

Police said the person who was scammed responded to a friend’s Facebook post that indicated they were selling items from their residence. The post was accompanied by photos of the items, according to the affidavit.

Police said they later determined the friend’s Facebook account was hacked.

Police said the person, who was scammed, sent $4,500 to the alleged scammer’s Venmo, an electronic payment app.

Police determined using search warrants the Venmo account belonged to Lui, but found the bank account associated with the Venmo information did not exist.

Lui’s preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
