Crews respond to Tuesday morning fire at a Cranberry Township hotel

Fire departments responded Tuesday morning, Feb. 11, to find a fire in an unoccupied room at the Wingate by Wyndham in Cranberry Township, according to an official.

Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company Chief Scott Garing said the fire, reported just after 6 a.m., was caused by a wall-mounted HVAC unit.

Six crews responded to the fire, according to Garing, who said the company has responded to multiple fires caused by wall-mounted HVAC units at the hotel.

He said the units are inspected when installed, but regular maintenance is up to the hotel.

Garing said the call came in for an automatic fire alarm after it activated, but there was not enough heat for the sprinkler system to deploy. Damage was mostly contained to the room, except for a window breaking in the room next door, Garing said.

Crews were on scene for about an hour an a half to ventilate the building after putting out the fire. Since the second-floor windows don’t open, Garing described the effort as a coordinated effort to systematically open doors and windows, pushing smoke down stairwells and in different directions.

“Getting smoke out of that building isn’t the easiest thing,” he said.

Adams Area Fire District, Callery Volunteer Fire Company, Cranberry Township police and EMS, Harmony Fire District, New Sewickley Fire District and Wexford Volunteer Fire Company also responded.
