More charges filed against man accused of selling stolen lifts
More charges were filed against a Pittsburgh man accused of selling stolen lifts on Facebook Marketplace in Butler and other counties.
Michael Lamont Franklin Jr., 23, was charged with one felony count each of theft by unlawfully moving an object, theft by deception and receiving stolen property by the state police Bureau of Criminal Investigation related to a May 24 incident.
The incident was part of a larger investigation into 35-foot JLG boom lifts stolen from Home Depot locations and sold on Facebook Marketplace, according to the affidavit. Police previously charged Franklin in the crime with one felony count each of theft, theft by deception and receiving stolen property related to an Oct. 10 incident in Harrisville.
State police in Butler recovered a stolen lift from a Slippery Rock man who said he purchased the lift from a man he thought was Franklin for $8,900. Police found the lift to have been rented two days prior from a Home Depot in Streetsboro, Ohio.
The seller taught the buyer how to operate the lift and said he used to do painting but was no longer in the business and no longer needed the lift, according to the affidavit.
Police referenced a database of stolen equipment and found Franklin had changed the numbers on the lift, according to the affidavit. Police searched Franklin’s phone records and found trips between Pennsylvania and Ohio and other charges connecting him and his truck to the stolen lifts.
Franklin’s preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
