Butler man charged in hit-and-run in Jefferson Township

A Butler man was arrested after he allegedly fled the scene of a Jefferson Township crash where the driver was severely injured, police said.

State police charged Jake T. Waltz, 26, with one felony count each of aggravated assault by vehicle and accidents involving injury, and one misdemeanor count each of accident involving injury and accident involving damage related to a March 1 crash at the intersection of Fisher Road and Route 356.

Police said Waltz ran a stop sign at the intersection and struck a vehicle that was traveling on Route 356 in a “T-bone” manner. The collision pushed the other vehicle off the road into a tree.

Police said both vehicles were severely damaged. The operator of the other vehicle sustained serious injuries, including a head injury and lost consciousness before being taken to Butler Memorial Hospital.

Police said Waltz fled the scene in his vehicle. Police tracked the vehicle from witness descriptions and arrested Waltz on March 4.

Police said Waltz told them he drove home from his friend’s house near Saxonburg and that the next thing he remembered was being woken up by his roommate, who informed him his truck had been crashed.

Waltz’s preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
